Spanish company Led Projects has joined SAPCA (Sports and Play Construction Association), the UK's leading trade association for sports and recreational facility construction. The move comes at a time of rapid padel growth across the United Kingdom and further strengthens the company's presence in one of Europe's most dynamic emerging markets.
As part of this expansion, Led Projects supplied the lighting system for the six courts used at the Premier Padel London P1, the first Qatar Airways Premier Padel Tour tournament ever held in the United Kingdom.
Lighting: a key factor in the UK's padel expansion
The British padel market has one distinctive characteristic: more than three-quarters of the new courts planned are expected to be indoor or covered facilities. In a country where daylight hours are limited during winter, high-quality lighting is essential to maximise court usage and club profitability.
At the same time, lighting has become a critical issue in the planning process. Noise and light pollution are among the main reasons local authorities reject or restrict planning applications for new padel facilities. To address these challenges, UK regulations require compliance with the Institution of Lighting Professionals' GN01 guidance, which establishes strict limits on light spill affecting neighbouring residential properties.
To meet these requirements, Led Projects has developed an asymmetrical optical system specifically designed for the geometry of a 20 × 10 metre padel court, focusing light on the playing surface while minimising unwanted light outside the facility.
Juan Antonio Pérez, CEO and Co-founder of Led Projects, said: "When a local authority requires a club to switch off its lights at ten o'clock at night, it has already lost its most profitable playing hours. That problem cannot be solved afterwards—it has to be prevented through the lighting design."
From professional tournaments to everyday clubs
The lighting installed for the Premier Padel London P1 complies with the demanding BS EN 12193 standard for professional competition, including minimum illuminance levels, uniformity, vertical lighting for television broadcasting, flicker control for high-speed cameras and high colour rendering performance.
